Healthy CityHealthy City Brighton & Hove
David Brindley, a Health Promotion Specialist involved with the healthy city programme and an advocate of The Grand Hotel Mini Mile Races gives the following advice:

These days, ’modern life’ can mean that we’re all a lot less active. With so many opportunities to watch TV or play computer games we don’t move about as much we used to. That’s why Brighton and Hove is proud to be part of the global Healthy Cities movement, demonstrating a commitment to encourage, support, and provide opportunities for everyone to get more active and move for health

Children need to do at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day to burn off calories and prevent them storing up excess fat in the body which can lead to cancer, diabetes and heart disease. It also keeps their bones healthy and encourages muscle strength and flexibility.

It’s important that they try and do activities that really get their hearts pumping. This can be things like jumping, skipping, dancing, running, or just playing games. Keeping physically active can also help to develop children’s mental well being and build positive self esteem

NHS Brighton and Hove is proud to be a supporter of the Grand Hotel Mini Miles and believe they are a fantastic opportunity for children of all abilities to come together, have fun, be part of the Brighton Marathon weekend, and, get physically active. All of which will help us to become a truly Healthy City!

Food ParnershipBrighton & Hove Food Partnership
Brighton and Hove Food Parntership experts give the following advice:

Food is fuel – so following a well balanced diet before race day will help children (and adults) run with power and confidence.

Healthy eating is based on a varied diet of:
• Starchy foods or carbohydrates (such as bread or pasta) for energy
• Fruit and vegetables for vitamins and minerals
• Protein (such as meat, fish, eggs or beans) for building muscle.

Tips for Race Day Runners

1. Eat a healthy breakfast (like the mini-mile muesli above) but try not to eat for two hours before the race – eating too close to activity can lower energy levels as your body is trying to digest the food.

2. Drink water instead of energy or sports drinks that are high in sugar and caffeine.

3. Make sure you have planned a healthy meal for after the race to replace all the nutrients that have been used up.
