Brighton Marathon 2012 FAQs

Are there still places in the 2012 Brighton Marathon?
Yes Charity places are still available. Please click here, to view over 300 charities are looking for runners to help fund their activities.

Do I have a place? Was I successful in your ballot?
On June 1st successful names were drawn and those people informed by email that they can run in the 2012 Brighton Marathon once they have registered their details and paid the entry fee.

A unique ballot entry code was sent to all successful ballot entries. Runners had until June 17th to register their details and pay. If you did not enter your details and pay by June 17th you will have lost your place and will need to look at a charity place from the drop down list on the website.
The deadline for accepting and registering your charity place is March 1st 2012

I am now unable to run in the 2012 race; what is the deferral policy?
We allow deferral of individual entries up to the Friday night before the 2012 event (April 13th). If you do have to defer, you will be sent a deferral code with instructions on what to do next.

If you do defer, this guarantees you a place in the 2013 race but payment for your 2013 entry is still necessary - we simply cannot afford as organisers, to lose entry monies because an individual was unable to run.

Please click here to defer.

Last year I had a charity place but could not run. Will you still have my place?
The simple answer is No. Your chosen charity may have used this entry for another runner so you need to liaise with them directly. Most likely is that you will need to re-apply for a place with the charity of your choice.

Can I transfer my number to someone else?
The deadline for accommodating requests of this nature was 1st June 2011. Transfers are no longer possible; you will need to defer your place if you are unable to run. It is against race rules to transfer your number to another person.  If you are found to gift or sell your place to another runner your entry will be deleted and you will not be allowed to enter Brighton Marathon in the future.

I can no longer take part can I receive a refund?
Refunds were administered up until 1st June 2011.   After this date NO REFUNDS will be available.

How many entries are there?
Entries have been increased from 15,000 in 2011 to 18,000 in 2012.

When will I receive my race pack for the 2012 race?
Race Packs, for those who purchased a guaranteed place before April 30th have the option to have their race pack sent to them (approximately 3-4 weeks before the 2012 race) or to collect it from the 'Are You Ready' Brighton Marathon Exhibition.

Race packs for all ballot entrants and charity entrants MUST be collected at the Are You Ready Brighton Marathon Exhibition at the Brighton Centre between Friday April 13th and Saturday April 14th. Doors open at 10am close at 8pm on Friday and 6pm prompt on Saturday.

We suggest that all race packs are collected.

Why do we have to collect our race packs?
For the last two years some Race packs have not been received on time by our runners.  This has led to an increase in work load for the Brighton Marathon team at the most critical period before the event.  To ensure that we do not have the problems in the future we have decided to ask runners, or a friend, a member of their family, a running buddy or a colleague to collect the number instead.  This should ensure that every runner wakes up on race day morning with the correct information, number, race chip and kit bag.

If I move house between entering and the time when my race pack is sent to me, what happens then?
The online entry system we use enables adjustment of personal details including your address. Go back in to your account and update your details Click here.

I need to change my email address and phone number?

What time does the race start?
The race starts at 9am in Preston Park.

What fluid is available on race day?
Because the course has changed slightly we will be moving a few of the fluid stations. There will be water along the route at miles: 3 - 6 - 8 - 11 - 13 - 15 - 17 – 19 - 21 - 22 - 23 - 24 - 25 and 25.5. Powerade drink fuel stations will be provided at miles: 5 - 12 - 19 and 24

Fuel stations on race day
Clifbar Shot Bloks will be available at: miles: 8 and 15. Shot Bloks are electrolyte jelly cubes, similar in consistency to Turkish Delight, but providing a lot more energy!

Both are just before a water station and we recommend chewing these and helping them down with water.

Clifbar Energy Gel Station will be available at Mile 21

Will there be a Park and Ride scheme again?
We are providing a Park and Ride Scheme for Brighton Marathon runners and their accompanying spectators. To reserve your space YOU NEED TO BOOK ONLINE, click here for more information.

I am thinking about staying in Brighton; where do you suggest?
Brighton has a wealth of hotels and B & B’s. We suggest that once you’ve entered, you book early to avoid disappointment. More details to come but a quick internet search will throw up dozens of establishments to suit just about every pocket.

Can I buy Brighton Marathon commemorative clothing?
Brighton Marathon exclusive merchandise is available from the Brighton Marathon Store; go towww.brightonmarathonstore.co.uk and there will also be a Brighton Marathon stand at our Expo where merchandise will be available.

I would like to volunteer on the day for your 2012 event, how do I register?
Please click here to sign up. Click here to register your interest If you have any queries please contact Tracey Allen – Head of Community and Volunteers at tracey@brightonmarathon.co.uk

Does any of the entrant fee go to charity?
No, the entrant fee goes towards the cost of putting on the race.  We do however work closely with local, national and international charities in helping them to raise millions of pounds for their causes. For our 2011 race, over 230 charities benefitted from an association with the event.  In 2012 this will increase to over 300 charities.

Are you offering refunds to people who are successful in the London ballot?
No. We offered this for our inaugural race in 2010 but are not repeating this offer again.

Is the course the same as last year?
The course will remain the same as in 2010 and 2011. If you ran in both previous editions of the race, you’ll have noticed a lot more barrier lines in our second race and fewer pinch points; our aim is to keep improving on the race day experience of every runner.

Will there be a Brighton Marathon Exhibition in 2012?
Yes, the Brighton Marathon Exhibition will be held again in 2012 at the Brighton Centre on Friday April 13th and Saturday April 14th – more information to follow.

What is the minimum age for marathon participants?
The minimum age for marathon participants is 18 on race day.

Are you planning the Mini Mile races again.
Yes, we are definitely planning the highly successful mini mile races again for 2012. To register your interest please click here

Can I run in fancy dress?
Yes this is allowed of course, but please bear in mind the race day weather conditions and appropriate fluid intake should your fancy dress layers leave you needing extra hydration.

Can I use my iPod or similar device on race day?
No, we do not advocate the use of headphones on the day, due to health and safety, plus there are plenty of entertainment sites and crowds to cheer you on. In addition, wearing anything that isolates you from the sounds of the day would mean that you would miss out on the marathon atmosphere.

I am quite a slow runner, what happens if I don't finish or it takes me more than 6 hours?

The roads around the course obviously have to have a re-opening schedule. We have worked this out so that even if someone was just continually walking fast (and we do not advocate "walking" – we expect every entrant to be able to jog for at least significant portions of the race), they will be able to finish the race on the actual road surface of the route. However, anyone moving around the course at slower than seven hour pace (that is slower than 4 miles an hour), may be told to move on to the pavement and in effect regard themselves as a pedestrian. Most of the last five miles are not on public roads, so this should not be a problem.
